It's planting season! Paul was kind enough to till the garden a few times, so I was able to stock up on all the goodies I want to plant this year. Yes, I'm excited. First, I started these seeds - lettuce, tomatoes, spearmint, cilantro, jalapenos, rosemary and green peppers.
Then I planted two blueberry bushes, rhubarb, and asparagus. The latter two I planted last year, but they didn't take. So I'm trying again, in a new location. I thought I was in pretty good shape with all the running and weights I do, until I had to dig that stupid trench to plant the asparagus.
And finally, I picked up beets, garden beans, sweet corn, peas, summer squash, and zucchini. I'll plant the peas once Paul tills the garden once more. The others I'll plant in late March, directly in the garden. This will be our first year trying to grow corn. I've heard a lot of horror stories about it, but my boys just adore corn. So we're going to give it a shot.

ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Thursday!
Eva
Tease! ;-)
ReplyDeleteIsn't this such a wonderful time of the year. Busy as well! Seeds are starting to grow, soil warming up. So much to do and so little time. Have a blessed week and enjoy your time in the garden!
ReplyDeleteWhen your dad was a teenager, he borrowed a big field from a neighbor, planted corn and then sold his crop. He knows some tricks. I remember he said when the silks came out on the ears, he put one drop of mineral oil at the head of each ear and they didn't find a single ear of corn with a worm on it.
ReplyDeletei've got to get some planting done. the ffa sells a lot of plants this time of year and i always buy some tomato plants and basil. i was just thinking that i should be seeing that order form soon!
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me that you're already planting. You are gonna have another fantastic garden!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful garden you will have!
ReplyDeleteI am still planning to stop by your Facebook discussion at 3:00.
Have you tried planting your corn in mounds, with fish in the hole first? I hear it works. And that might be sort of cool for your boys ;)
ReplyDeleteI am ready to get out there and get some planting done too. Need to get my son to do the tilling.
I haven't gotten mine yet, but you're inspiring me to shake a leg!
ReplyDeleteWe have plans to plant the cooler weather stuff in the garden this weekend. Hooray for fresh!!
ReplyDeleteCorn is easy peasy! Don't listen to all the expert advice out there. We don't and always have a bumper crop. We always grow Silver Queen. The only special thing we do is till in some fertilizer before we plant. We always seed closer than recommended and never thin:)
I can't wait to see how well your garden does.
ReplyDeleteOur rule of thumb in Nebraska (well, my rule of thumb,) is wait until Mother's Day to plant the garden.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have quite a variety and should see success in most of your choices. Fun!
Oh you are making me wish planting season were here NOW! I can't plant most seeds till the end of May!
ReplyDeleteHi dear,
ReplyDeleteFollowing you back..
I hope we will have good connection..
Have fun!
I don't even get to think about an outdoor garden yet...won't get to plant until end of May or early June (if we're lucky). But I'm trying some herb seeds in the house for the first time!
ReplyDeletehoping your garden is successful. i don't garden in texas - just can't get used to the growing season here compared to how i grew up in wis...
ReplyDeleteHow fun to start gardening already! Good luck with your corn and asparagus.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to plant a garden last year. It was so cold, damp and dreary all the way into June and I lost my motivation.
I want to try container gardening. I also saw pallet gardening on Pinterest. I need to look at that one again.
Wow, that is a LOT!!! But then again, it is a farm. It makes me tired just reading this. Good luck with the corn, we have lots and lots of corn fields around here.
ReplyDeleteI love spring planting time! I have to wait a bit longer here, but I know it won't be long. I planted 3 rhubarbs several years ago hoping that with three the odds would be better for one to survive. All three did, and the plants have gotten huge! I'm glad that so many of my friends and family love the stuff because there is plenty to share.
ReplyDeleteI bet your corn will do well too! Happy gardening Lisa:)
I'm jealous of what you'll have on your dinner table this year!
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly looking forward to getting outside and working in the garden. It's going to be hard not to plant too soon with the unseasonably warm weather we're having.
ReplyDeletewe dug up some of my gramma's asparagus last year and planted it in our yard. her plant must be at least 50 years old. can't wait to see what we get!
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first year planting- upon the request of my 4 yr old daughter! I hope our results are good! Will keep you posted!
ReplyDeleteThis time of year is so exciting! I love growing corn but once the birds start to get in it, we cut it all down and get what we can because they tear it up quickly!
ReplyDeleteYou inspire me to plant my own garden! I really want to, but I need to find the motivation (and a green thumb).
ReplyDeleteit's just so rewarding when you start with seeds rather then plants!!
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful, healthy way to feed your family!!
My yard has tons of fruit trees. I often trade fruit for home grown veggies and even fresh cut flowers. I can't plant anything as my dog chews it all up.
ReplyDeleteI am totally jealous! You will have a wonderful garden! I wish I could be as inventive in gardening!
ReplyDeleteI just bought a lot of seeds today to start planting.
ReplyDeleteI TRY to wait until Mother's Day to plant the beans, squash and melons but usually can't get past the first of May! It sounds like you guys will have a wonderful garden this year! I'm looking forward to watching it grow!
ReplyDeleteNice variety! I need to get my rear in gear and get our garden planted before it's too hot...
ReplyDeleteI have already sorted through my "seed stash" to determine what/if I need to buy. I cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteGAH! I always miss these things!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm going to be watching your little garden grow, so to speak, so keep us updated on it's progress. Mine was such a disaster last year I almost hesitate to try again. It doesn't help everything has to be in a planter ... renting.
Have I mentioned I love that you have a real farm? ;)
I haven't been visiting much lately, sorry, just wanted to say hello. I will miss my garden this year, but I can certainlly view yours' as it progresses! Hope all are well. Hugs
ReplyDeleteLoretta
Oh I am envious that you have already started planting. I am so ready!!
ReplyDeleteI wondered how much gardening you did. Love to see the seed packets, both openened and waiting to be opened : )
ReplyDeleteDamn! You are going to have one heck of a patch, Baby-girl! I'm proud of you!!!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteMaybe in May the weather will warm and maybe we can plant too.
ReplyDeleteHave fun planting and digging.
I love to dig!
