Homemade Pretzels Recipe on Rural Thursday

As I continue to search for portable, easy homemade snacks for my boys, I've been trying all sorts of new recipes.  Recently I made homemade pretzels, which went over very well.
This recipe comes from The Tightwad Gazette II.  Paul made fun of me for reading this book, but it has really wonderful ideas.  Although it's slightly outdated now, I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for easy ways to economize in the home.

Ingredients:
1 package yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tbsp. salt
4 cups flour
1 egg

Combine yeast, water, sugar and salt in a large bowl.  Stir in flour.  Knead until dough is smooth.  Shape dough.  Place on greased cookie sheet.  Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.  Bake at 425* for 15 minutes.

It's Rural Thursday!  Time to link up with Nancy from A Rural Journal and myself, to share your rural life stories, adventures, and home tips.  Just grab the code beneath the button and paste it into your blog post.  Then come back, link up your webpage, and take the time to visit and comment on the blogs of at least 5 other participants.  Have fun!

  6. Those look wonderful!! I used to make my own breads all the time. Now I don't because they all call for yeast and sugar.

  18. Those pretzels look really tasty! The last time I made homemade pretzels was when I was in junior high in cooking class. I think I might give them a try again. :)

I'm sorry I haven't commented much! I've been reading but haven't taken the time to comment. I hope everything is well for you!

  21. I made those before. That was one of the first things I learned how to make. It was part of a cooking class I took in school. It's a super fun recipe and tastes well.

I've had different dipping sauces, just ate them plain and made what I called Pretzel Pizza. It was the crust for the pizza.

  24. These look delicious, and sound pretty easy, although I never have very good luck when I have to use yeast...so does the yeast mixture have to be at any certain temperature? Because that's usually where I go wrong ;)

  38. Here they are, the Finnish pretzels, if you can open the image below :) I couldn't find the English recipe online. I am not Finnish and don't speak the language yet, so I found these in a cookbook and the picture there was soooo inviting that I decided to give it a try and make them (haven't yet :D)
