I no longer saw his big black butt hanging out of the hole of his web. And the threaded highways he'd built that took over the remnants of my lilies was starting to fall down. I didn't give it much thought.
Until I picked up a mum from Lowe's when I went to buy sand to preserve my beets for the winter. I was digging a nice hole to plant my mum, right by the spider's bush, where I'd previously planted lavender that I somehow managed to kill. And about 3 inches down in the dirt? AAACKK! It was the wolf spider! I guess he thought he'd hibernate for the winter. Well, I was already armed with a spade and I have to say...this is one wolf spider I won't be seeing again.

Did you know spiders don't like peppermint? Plant some or mix the essential oil with some water in a spray bottle. =)
ReplyDeleteWe have a ton of spiders making their home around our front door. No matter how many I kill, they always come back. I think it is because of our motion light on the porch - which is supposed to scare away the raccoons so they stop getting into our garbage :-) I could do with a few less spiders though...
ReplyDeleteEW!!! I dislike spiders. Really. In the summer months, every morning there is one that builds a web across the doorway at our porch. I knock it down because they are huge! Did I mention I don't like spiders?
ReplyDeleteOh I never seen a wolf spider but I am sure it is big and not nearly as cute as the one on your door:) B
ReplyDeleteI did not know they burrowed into the ground and hibernated but it makes sense!
ReplyDeleteI like your "new" door spider much better!! :)
Wonderful post and lovely photography ~ stay warm and dry ~ it is cooler here today than it has been ~ (A Creative Harbor)
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by and commenting ^_^
The one you have on the door is the only one I would want to see up close.
ReplyDeleteACCKKKK! I can't stand those big spiders. I just "removed" two yesterday- one on the front porch and one on the back.
ReplyDeleteYuck! I had no idea it would burrow and hibernate.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least the Halloween decoration is cute!
talk about wrecking HIS plans!
ReplyDeleteWolf spiders are not welcome here for sure. I have a crane fly hanging by a thread outside my window right above my table which keeps me entertained.
ReplyDeletei dont like spidys ;-(

Ack...about the wolf spider!! But thanks for hosting the blog hop!! Have a great week...Nancy at livininthegreen.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteMy husband does NOT like spiders. So when we have a spider, I have to be the man of the house and get it for him. LOL!
ReplyDeleteoh my kiddos would have been all over that spider!
ReplyDeleteEEEKKKKK,,,, Glad you had your spade handy.
ReplyDeleteI have these big black spiders that love to hang right on my basement steps. Creeps me out.
ReplyDeleteWe get wolf spiders here in Nebraska. We even started getting brown recluse ones. YIKES! Spiders don't scare me, but their poison does.
ReplyDeleteIsaak used to have bad dreams that he was stuck in a web. Your house might scare him. HA HA
*shivers* Spiders really creep me out! I hate to kill living things, but sometimes you just have to for sanity and safety!
ReplyDeleteWell, he won't be bothering you again!
ReplyDeleteNow what are the chances of that? Finding the wolf spider in the dirt like that! Double aack!! I didn't realize spiders hibernated, so I'll be careful when I dig too...
ReplyDeleteI love the mum you got-it's such a pretty color, and the spider you hung up looks so friendly-my favorite kind:)
I didn't know spiders hibernated like that. I would have probably run away from it! :-)
ReplyDeleteI prefer the spider on your door too. :))
ReplyDeleteWonderful to be able to dip into your rural world - the joy of blogs!
ReplyDeleteEeeek! I've seen some HUGE wolf spiders out here. Like crazy huge. So scary!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a wolf spider. Are they poisonous?
ReplyDeleteI love your door spider. Much more friendly. :)
I just remembered I have a door spider decoration....must go dig it out! Happy 10-11-12♫♪
ReplyDeleteThis hop looks like it is going to be a good one!
ReplyDeleteYou are a young Mom, of course you will crop out the messy house, who wouldn't. hahahaha.
The spider is making a web very similar to that stuff people by to stretch on their homes - but you have the real thing!!!! yay! lol
Your ending was perfect!
ReplyDeleteANY spiders I find are on the endangered list - of not surviving. :)
Lovely mums!
We've had so many webs here lately! Yuck! I can deal with your door spider. :) Cute!
ReplyDeleteI didn't look and didn't read, I can't do spiders :(
ReplyDeleteShivers from that story. I like spiders, but I'm not sure I want to have that kind of interaction with them.
ReplyDeletePretty spider webs.
ReplyDeleteIt's fair to say you gave that spider a chance.
ReplyDeleteYour porch looks so festive.
I just do not like spiders. as long as they stay out side I let them be. Once they invade my home my son usually scoops them up and takes them out.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!
Ewww on the wolf spider! Love your door spider though!
ReplyDeletePoor little spider!
ReplyDeletehaha, free halloween decorations, from the wolf spider!!
ReplyDeleteYIKES! Glad you got that spider!
ReplyDeleteThat is so interesting about the wolf spiders hibernating. I don't kill spiders unless they are in the house or they are poisonous, because they kill bad bugs. Inside the house is another matter. I love your door...ready for Halloween.
ReplyDeleteYael from Home GArden Diggers
Sorry...I could not come after all. Today maybe...

Another sleepless night now for me Lisa!
ReplyDeleteAt least you didn't have any giant flies around the house!
This is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHope to see you on my blog:)
There is a HUGE freaky web strung between two of my shrubs. I shudder to think about the spider that made it.
ReplyDeleteThat would scare me!
ReplyDeleteLove your 'welcome' horse bell at the door!
ReplyDelete(Goodbye and good riddance to that spider!)
