On the last day of November, Pierce was jumping around the living room and jumped on Paul, who was laying on the floor, and jumped back off again. When he landed, his large toe on his left foot was tucked under. He cried for a while over it, and was given some ibuprofin before bed. The next day he said it still hurt, and he didn't want to wear a regular shoe over it. We allowed him to wear sandals (and sent tennis shoes in his backpack since technically they aren't supposed to wear sandals to school). We assumed it was a bad sprain. There was no bruising, and just a mild puffiness. Over the next few days, Pierce continued to complain now and then that his toe hurt, but it didn't seem to slow him down as he still jumped and ran about the house like the active kid that he is.
But finally it was 9 days later and he was still saying off and on that it hurt. So I decided to make a doctor appointment for him after school the next day. We went to the pediatrician and he thought since it had been a while he would send him on to an orthopedic doctor for an x-ray. So I spent three hours that day in and out of doctors offices with all 3 boys in tow - it made for a very long afternoon! The x-ray was inconclusive, but the 3 orthopedic doctors who looked at it thought that he may have had a fracture in a growth plate, which wouldn't be visible until it started to heal, 14 days post injury. Since it was only 10 days post injury, we wouldn't know for sure for a few more days. So they gave Pierce some bandages and a boot to wear (even when sleeping) and made an appointment 10 days later.
After a few days in the boot, Pierce said his toe had stopped hurting. He was hopeful they would proclaim him healed when he returned. But when they took the x-ray, they could see the healing and told us that Pierce had a buckle or torus fracture. Very common in children due to their softer bones, it's where the bone buckles on one side, but doesn't disrupt the other side. So Pierce is stuck wearing his boot for another 3 weeks. Hopefully once we return he will be able to return to regular shoes again! I knew a broken bone was bound to happen at some point or another with 3 boys. I'm glad he's at least feeling better!
How about you, readers? Any broken bones in your childhood?
Nope none here and thankfully my boys haven't either I hope it stays like that
ReplyDeleteSo far so good, have been fortunate I suppose. Even though I have done and still do a lot of running.
ReplyDeleteI didn't, but younger sister had many.

Oh Ouch!!! It is a good thing that kids heal fast. I did that to my foot years ago aand Dang did it hurt.
ReplyDeleteMy shoulder was dislocated when I was two. My oldest boy broke all of his toes on one foot while bike-riding and had surgery and a cast.
ReplyDeleteGlad Pierce's injury was not that severe. :)
Oh poor baby- I don't know which is worse- the owie or the cure! Hope he recupes fully.. My first break was at the age of 9 when I flipped over my handlebars and somehow broke my toe; and I have been clumsy and accident prone ever since!
ReplyDeleteOuch!!! I do like the photo you took of his foot! I hope he gets better sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteI broke my collar bone when I was 4. My sister twisted my swing around and around and let go. We kept taking turns doing this and it was fun. One of the times I got off, I was so dizzy and ran smack dab into one of the metal pole holding up the swing set. It hurt, but when I went to go wash and dry my hands, I couldn't reach up at all. I was in a sling for some time.
I hope it heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteI waited until I was an adult to have a broken bone, and then it was a stress fracture. I remember it hurt quite a bit!
I can't even begin to count the number of bones I have broken over the years. Mostly due to horses. With 3 boys I am sure there will be more broken bones in your future.
ReplyDeleteI was sure you were going to say it was Paul who got something broken with Pierce jumping on him. Glad it's not TOO serious.
ReplyDeletePoor kid! I feel his pain. I'm in a knee-high aircast for 2 more weeks - even to sleep. But it is better than the alternative - a hard cast. Hope he heals quickly!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Baby Girl! Three weeks is a long time for such an active boy!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteouch! none for me. only 'fracture' in my adulthood came from zim stepping on my foot and cracking a few bones that still give me aches when the weather changes. :)
ReplyDeleteBeing a rather rough and tumble tomboy, I had a few broken bones growing up and a broken ankle as an adult... they hurt! Hope all turns out well with the growth plate injury...
ReplyDeleteYikes! Poor guy. Well I guess it's good it doesn't hurt too much, but if you guys have or get snow, I hope it doesn't prevent him from romping around out there!
ReplyDeleteIn other news, it's time to play My Life According to the Books I Read in 2012! There's a post up on my blog and a Mr.Linky too. I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)
Ouch! I'm glad he is going to be okay. No broken bones for me and none for my children growing up!
ReplyDeletePoor Pierce! Three weeks is a long time to a kid. Yes, I broke my left arm twice; the first time the bone broke the skin. I remember how itchy the cast was. Hope Pierce heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteOh...that must have been painful! What a strong little one, and he kept right on playing...oh to be young again! No bones broken but everything else is! Old age I suppose. LOL. Hope Pierce gets better soon! How are you?
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa, So sorry about Pierce's foot... Glad he is feeling better though...I was lucky throughout my son's lives that they never did have any fractures... I have never had one either... Amazing!!!! BUT--I do know that it is common especially in kids who are growing.
ReplyDeleteBless his heart... I'm sure that Santa was really good to him this year!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
Awww, so sorry this had to happen right around the holidays, but it sounds like he is being a brave boy! Believe it or not, I never broke a single bone in my childhood. I was about 33 when it finally happened! I was walking out the door and there was ice, and my poncho caught in the closing door and threw me back, also slipping on the ice as I went. Ella broke her arm bone horribly last year falling off the monkey bars, it was so bad.

ReplyDeleteYes, boys will be boys! I feel for the little guy. He sounds like a toughy sort of fellow though.
I had 3 boys and one girl. Funny thing was my daughter broke her bones twice and none of the boys ever did! But I never could get her to drink much milk, so I blame it on that-Ha!
Sad that it's par for the course with boys so much of the time. Poor little guy!
ReplyDeleteawwww poor guy! I have never broken a bone!
ReplyDeleteBless his heart; I know that hurts. Hopefully, as you said, when he goes back all will be well again.
ReplyDeletexoxo
Oh no! Poor guy :( I bet it's hard keeping him in the boot! I actually have never broken a bone before *knock on wood* just had a few sprains.
ReplyDeleteWell, a boot is easier to deal with than a cast, so I hope that is all it will take for him! My daughter broker her wrist last year and have to have it reset. My son has not had a broken bone...yet! I broke my kneecap at the age of 8 and was in a cast from ankle to hip for 6 weeks. Good times! lol
ReplyDeleteThe poor little footie! I am glad it is feeling better now- with the help of the magic boot.

Ouch! Sounds painful, but I'm glad he's starting to feel better. I've had my share of broken toes (three on one foot), a broken clavicle + concussion(from a riding accident) and a broken finger on my writing hand (in college).
ReplyDeleteWow that is something we never experienced. I hope he is through most of it by the time school gets going again!
ReplyDeleteOh I feel for you...my 2 kids each had broken bones, I think it would have been easier if my bones broke...seeing them in pain is so tough
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness - I am so sorry - I guess you were right - with three boys someone was bound to get something broken - but it still hurts!
ReplyDeleteAs an adult, I've broken three toes (at different times) because I keep walking into furniture. Stupid. You'd think I'd wear shoes, but I live in FL, so I'm in flip-flops all the time. Broken toes are so painful, you can hardly walk. I hope your boy gets around OK. So glad it was not worse!
ReplyDeletePoor little man! I'm glad it's not hurting anymore!
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, I haven't had to deal with broken bones with my kids yet. I sure hope it stays that way!
