Rock Formations

In front of our house, there is a weird rock/concrete formation in the ground, right next to where our apple tree used to be.  I've always wondered about it, because it is man-made.

It measures about 12" by 12", so it's fairly small.  What could it be for?  It seems a little small to be where an outhouse might have been once (plus, it seems strange to me that people would've put the outhouse in the front yard?).

Perhaps someday I should dig underneath?  What do you all think?  Might there be a time capsule under there?

  1. That is strange, was there an old house near your place. If it was an old farm and the apple tree was old there could have been some building or something that needed a support.

  2. Or a body, Baby Girl. At our old place, we found a headstone...dislodged...just lying in a pile!...:)JP

  5. Lord our yard is full of rocks like that. Came when they dug out for water lines and footers.. just piled them up off to the side..

  7. I think it's where a pet was buried!

  9. I tend to let sleeping dogs lie in such circumstances.

  10. It's a mystery! :) And yep, an outhouse in the front yard would be no good. ;)

  11. My first thought was a pet grave. Especially since it was at one time beneath an apple tree.

  12. Hmmm...I'm sure my curiosity would get the best of me and I'd have to see what's under there. Do it! And report back, of course. :)

  14. I wouldn't dig it up, I think it might be a grave for a pet under the apple tree.....

  15. It looks like it could have been a small tree that died long ago and petrified. Am I crazy or what? But that was the first thing I thought upon seeing it. Dig it up and give us all an adventure, what fun!

  16. Oh, treasure! But seriously, if you excavate, record measurements as you go along so if you do find remnants of a structure you can figure out the size. And take photos!

  17. If it's like my yard, it's probably an animal grave. I am always moving my gardens around...digging here, moving that...so if a hamster dies, there is nowhere to bury them. That's when you have to turn to the lawn.

It's a gamble...I'd leave it and wonder. Or at least make up a good story!

  18. I wonder, too, if it's a pet grave or an old well? Would your county offices have any idea?

  19. No idea but a capsule sounds interesting. It could also be a long lost animal.

  21. I think a dog may be buried there . I always remember old stories where dogs were buried under their favorite shade tree.

  22. Metal detector could likely rule out a time capsule.

  23. Maybe a hole that needed filling? Quite the mystery. :)

  26. I hope it's something good. Maybe someone burred their pet there. I'm not sure. A time capsule would be so cool!

  27. I've read all of the comments here to gain a sense of what I might do. If you have a neighbor or friend with a metal detector, I'd try that first.
