If you've been following along for a while, you know I've grown to love these trash cans in Roanoke that have historic pictures on them. Tucked away in various neighborhoods, they are solar compactors that send an email when full.
I lucked into another one a couple of weeks ago, on the corner of 5th Street and Mountain Ave, just beyond the entrance to Highland Park. I love the black and white shot of kids going down a huge old slide. You don't see slides like this anymore - too dangerous I suppose.
If you're interested in the three other trash cans I've found, you can see pictures here and here. I believe there is just one more for me to find. I could look up the location and track it down - but it's much more fun to be surprised in my wanderings through town.

Roanoke City takes it trash seriously. I love those trash "devices" in my neighborhood. I just wish mine was smart enough to tell me what days are bulk/leaves/paper/plastic?? So confusing.
I love the pictures too. Finding these special cans must be so much fun.
Now that is a very cool trash can and I wish they would bring those big slides back I LOVED them and still have a go at it if they did. Great find Lisa. Hug B
What a great idea and they are interesting. Really liked the Howbart Farm with the blue sky.
And so, when do you have time to 'wander?' You busy mom, you!
(ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
It looks like a garbage vending machine!
How neat. I love these.
I like that black and white photo as well, those solar cans are amazing.
Fun cans, the Des Moines Register had an article on Sunday about fun in your area
that's really cute!
Such an art work, interesting!
There is one of those just up the street from Black Dog but I don't remember what it looked like, it may be on that you have a photo of. I didn't know what it was, thought it was some kind of newspaper box or something.
oh my gosh, these are so cool! now i want to run into these but i'm not going to cheat and hunt them out, like you i think it is more fun to find them accidentally!
I've never seen anything like that here. That's pretty cool, Lisa.
Have a wonderful day. :)
It's the little things, isn't it, that make life charming. Like designer dumpsters.
I like those cans. Roanoke is so forward-thinking. We had a similar slide--not so wide--at my elementary school.
That's fun that they make trash cans well less trashy.
They did that here with empty grain silos. A graphic designer had design contests, then got a grant to print banners to put on them. 5 years later they needed to be cleaned. It costs tons of money to do that. Also the designer moved. They opted to take them down. It's kind of sad! :( I'm going to miss the pop of color.
Dat is wel heel keurig gedaan.
I love it!! This is so funny, Lisa. Because this week, for some reason I have been thinking about those trash cans! They just pooped into my head. Hmmm, maybe I can now predict your future posts! Just call me the Mennonite Karnac!
Another one under your belt and off the list! I do think it is a great idea...:)JP
I've seen a few that you've shared; I had no idea that they send an email when full. GENIUS!!!! Love this.
I think it is a great idea!!
Our trash cans along the road side are not so artistic. They could knock a buzzard off the death cart at twenty paces in a hot summer month.
I have never seen anything like this. Very cool finds. I remember those slides from back in the day. (but not from 1928)
I'd never heard of the like. I must have been living in the sticks too long...;)
That's pretty cool!
That is such a fun idea to decorate the trash cans.
That's right - now that you mention it - those slides aren't around. They were really dangerous and really, really fun.
Very clever idea!
Interesting finds--I had to go back and look at your other two. I can't remember seeing anything like that so it would have grabbed my attention as well.
You where in my neighborhood. Did you stop by Highland park? Wish we could have seen each other. Hope you and your family are doing well.
Elizabeth
Thats very cool!

Oh I remember those slides too, but not with the curves in 'em. We used to hang off the sides on the top and jump. So not brilliant. ;)
You live in an interesting city, Lisa! Someone has put some imagination into these structures and yeah, I'll have a click-on look at the others too!
Just had a look. The Cabin on Howbart Farm image is very cool...
