This soft, yeasty orange juice bread recipe is a favorite of my family. Made completely from scratch, it does take a little extra work - kneading and rising. But sometimes the best things in life are worth an extra effort, and this is bread is one of those things.
The recipe comes from Paul's aunt, Tina. Does that make her my aunt-in-law? Anyhow, every recipe of hers that I've ever tried has been fantastic!
Ingredients:
1 pkg. yeast (or 1 1/2 tsp.)
1/2 cup warm water
2 tbsp. oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup orange juice
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 3/4 cup flour
2 tbsp. wheat germ (optional - I always add it)
Mix yeast and warm water and let set until yeast is bubbly, approximately 10 minutes. Add yeast to rest of the mixed bread ingredients. Knead until dough is smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes - okay to add a little flour if it is too sticky). Turn dough into greased bowl and let rise until double. Punch down and shape into loaf. Place dough loaf in a bread pan, and let rise again until double. Bake at 350* for 25 - 30 minutes.
A loaf of this bread lasts just minutes in my house. The boys will each eat three slices. They love it warm from the oven, slathered in butter.
Readers, do you make any recipes that take a little extra time, but are well worth the effort?
Oh I think it would be worth it. Sounds delicious I can see why it would disappear. Hug B
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fun to try. I make up bread combinations trying to incorporate lots of different grains into them. I will give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds delicious, but sorry to say, I dont like to cook, so doubt I would give that a try. Hubby does the cooking, so I may share with him and see if I can get him to try it.
ReplyDeletedat ga ik ook eens proberen je schrijft er zo mooi over dat je er trek van krijgt.
ReplyDeleteHey it looks a little harder than normal - but I bet I can make that - looks good!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be a taste tester for this one. Homemade bread is amazing. And yep, the extra effort is worth it for most things, I agree. :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks yummy!! I am not much for bread making, but it's on my "homesteading" to do list! hehe! - www.domesticgeekgirl.com

oooh that does sound good. Not much is better than a fresh warm loaf of homemade bread out of the oven, and this citrus twist I bet is divine!
ReplyDeleteThat bread sounds delicious, especially slathered with butter. The Blue Ridge Mountains is on my list of places I'd like to visit. I bet it is beautiful there.
ReplyDeleteThat bread looks darn good.
ReplyDeleteWell, sometimes I eat frozen vegetables out of a bag instead of vegetables out of a can. Does that count? That's pretty much as close as I come to a recipe on my own.
It looks awesome!! Wish I could smell it!
ReplyDeleteI have never hear of bread like that, sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteI miss making homemade bread. It smells so good coming out of the oven. The Orange Juice bread sounds very unique and delish!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me...the Pres hasn't used his bread maker in a long, long time!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteI want all the Tina recipes

I looks yummy! I haven't made homemade bread in years, but I might would break down and knead for this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm with your delightful boys. . . . . "warm from the oven slathered with butter", nothing better!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Lisa for stopping by and leaving a comment. I do enjoy reading of life in the country, especially those who live on farms anywhere in the world. Are you in North Carolina? We often visit Asheville, it being one of our favorite cities, and those Blue Ridge Mountains always welcome us with so much beauty no matter what season we arrive.
Hope you're snug up there this week - any snow? Here in Raleigh it's cold with a little ice yesterday, but not a single snowflake yet this winter. I would like a dusting before spring arrives!
Take care - have a great day.

I'll have to try this! I've been wanting to make my own bread. I've tried, but my husband didn't like the one recipe, and I didn't like the other. We do like a pumpkin bread, and a bear bread recipe. No others yet. I want to try this one.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the extra time was well worth it - I don't bake bread, but I'll for sure bet I'd like this one!!
ReplyDeleteOh, that sounds so yummy!
ReplyDeleteI love making bread I am going to have to pin for later and try this recipe. It sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I will have to try it out!
ReplyDeleteThis really sounds delicious! I bet my guys will love it.
ReplyDeleteNever had orange juice bread before, tempting to give it a try!!!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds delicious! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDang. Hubby is off yeast, eggs and dairy...
ReplyDeleteHaha! I understand completely where the boys are coming from. My Grandmother baked bread and used pure butter. At the boys' ages, I thought it was a complete meal. It was baked with love, that I can vouch for!
ReplyDeleteI made it. Everyone loved it, but my husband said, "It's just ok." He's super judging though. I thought it was tasty!
