Texts of the Future, to My Kids

This is a picture of the boys wearing sweaters that their great grandmother knitted for them.  Cort, as always, has to be a little different.

Now that the boys are back in school, and we're all back to our normal routines, I miss our winter break.  It was so nice to relax and not rush about with obligations.  I liked having the extra time with them.

As any mom, I still think of the boys while they are off at school.  I'm busy myself, so I don't have a lot of time to daydream, but I do often see little things through the day that I know they'd love.  Or I pick up something they need at the store.  And I think, "Oh, I wish I could text him to let him know!"

Do you think, when they're in high school, and old enough that I break down and buy them cell phones....do you think they'll be embarrassed to be getting a bunch of texts from mom?  Because let me tell you - I am saving them up!

  1. You mean they don't already have cell phones? :-) Just kidding. I am amazed at the ages some kids have phones.

No, I dont think they will be embarrassed by anything you do. Those are gorgeous sweaters! What a treasure to have ones that their great-grandmother made.

  3. Those are home knit??? Love them all! It's a cute picture too. And embarrassing our kids can be fun... I did it today in the 1st grade when my son's sock came off w/his boot. For some reason his bare foot made his face red, lol, so I had to hold the sock up high...it's just what moms do. ;) :) He laughed, but he sure did grab that sock back with a quickness. :)

  4. Very nice sweaters, my mom used to knit a lot. I wore some ragged mittens yesterday she had made decades ago, she used to draw your hand for the pattern.

  6. I text my youngest in HS but he won't tolerate any gushy mom-like stuff. It's all business, usually about his diabetes. Hum, guess I can text my granddaughters next!

  7. Well I hope they never get tired of hearing from you --since I still text and contact my 3 sons (who are in their 40's-50's now).... ha

Cute sweaters and gorgeous sons.. They are growing up MUCH too fast.
    Hugs,

  8. Think you will be a " helicopter " mom? Who knows by the time your guys get to the age of carrying iPhones? Just don't attach a GPS or follow with a drone. They would hate that!!! Love the sweaters and especially Cort's Turtles mask. He is a "kick." Linda@ Wetcreek Blog

  9. Love the sweaters, and such a good job making them. Cell phones are useful, but especially when they become teens, they wont want Mom calling toooo often! lol

  11. Cort is so cute! And the lovingly knitted sweaters are a perfect fit. Have they started asking for cells yet? Are you planning on holding off till high school? Middle school? Hey, we went to Kroger last night and found BOTH the teas!! I will be trying the chocolate in a few minutes with lunch, and we will have the other tonight with dinner!

  12. They look so handsome in their handknit sweaters, and I love Cort's originality. (He looks absolutely adorable!)

Text away, it is our solemn duty to make our children cringe from time to time - it prepares them for the world when they're adults. ;-) j/k

  13. Oh Lisa I know how hard it is to not want to give your kids a phone so you can say hello and they can say it back. They would never be embarrassed you are a great Mom. I think it would be expensive and they already know you love them. They know save the money. D Just my opinion Lisa.... LOVE the sweaters. I text back and forth with my daughters and they are in their thirties. They never had cellphones and they were fine. HUG B

  14. First of all those are lovely knitted sweaters. I do not believe they will be embarrassed by your text messages. They may go through a phase but that will pass.

  15. We gave our kids phones in middle school out of necessity. And it wasn't because they were in middle school...it's because the darn school will not let them use the phone to call and there are no pay phones anymore. You'll know when you need to get them phones. It becomes a necessary thing at some point.

We just limited the texting --but that was back in the day. Now all plans have unlimited texting.

You'll surprise yourself on how you sort of know the limit to how much you will contact them during the day. I've got friends who constantly talk to their kids. Me, not so much. But when something is going on or we need each other, the fingers are flying!

  16. I think if your kids don't have cell phones to text before high school that you have moved to a remote island somewhere. In any case. Kids love to text - no matter who it is : )
You are blessed that they have a great grandma. They are too.

  20. Oh man! This touches my heart. I often think of the future and if they'll be embarrassed by my hijinks. I hope not. Sometimes I wish they'd just stay little.

  21. Those are nice sweaters. My grandma used to knit. I remember when she made my sister, and boy cousins all sweaters one year. They were adorable.

It's funny that Cort has to be the different one. :) Reid and Pierce look so much like twins in the face. If it wasn't for their size difference I'd think that was the case.

I never thought about cell phones. I'm not a big texter - if that's even a word. It was odd when the boys were little I called my parents or husband to check up on them. When they went to school I couldn't do that anymore.

  26. I bet they will love the texts from Mom.... but... as fast as things are changing, are we going to still have texting?

  27. I can see you getting a humorous push-back text like: "Oh, Mom. Not now!" Especially if it's prom season, although I know driving lessons and girls are still years away! :)

  28. Hi Lisa, I really love this post!
    Your children are so beautiful.
Their sweaters are very lovely too.
About cell phones, I do not know what to tell you. My experience is bad...
My grandchildren hang up on me when they hear me, grandmom's voice.
They did not accept my friend's request in Facebook. They do not write to me at all. My daughter answers my phone calls once in a while. She answers my emails with one or two words, or does not answer at all. My daughter told me she does not have room for me in her house, because it is too crowded...
I really miss my dear family, but I guess, they do not need me, poor maternal grandmom. I guess they are busy with their paternal grandmother who is a very RICH lady...
God bless you, Lisa, family, loved ones. Warm Hugs from Starry.

  30. We'll be moms to teenage boys at the same time... I think (secretly) we'll still be cool, and they'll still love hearing from us :)
