We have a campsite on top of one of the mountains on our property. It is about a mile and a quarter hike up to it.
The twins love the new backpacks they got for their birthday. Pierce is still using one of Paul's, but he is hoping to get a kid sized backpack for his birthday later this month.
The hike up to the top is really steep. The boys have been hiking up there as long as they can remember, though, so they don't complain.
There are a couple of hammocks for hiking recovery, and plenty of trees for climbing, if you don't feel tired.
We have two spots at the top for cooking. This is the spot we use if it is very dry or windy, because the big rock over the fire pit offers added protection. Years ago Paul built several benches to go around the fire pits. There was a time when the benches had signatures burned into them from people who had visited our campsite, but these faded with time.
There is also a horse shoe pit. Paul beats me at horse shoes every single time. This time, I lost 15/10.
Bo came up to the campsite but this is a rare siting. Usually he's running all over the place nonstop, chasing birds.
No campout is complete until there are smores over the fire. Sadly, we forgot to bring up the chocolate this time, but marshmallows with graham crackers are still tasty.
Readers, do you enjoy camping out?
How fun! I love to camp, but sadly, we haven't had a chance to do it this year. Nothing beats hiking in the woods and then rewarding oneself with a yummy treat. S'mores are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteWe aren't campers, but cooking anything on a fire tastes better. Even without the chocolate ;) Linda@Wetcreek Blog
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to give camping out a go sometime.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect place and time to spend family time. Hug B
ReplyDeleteThat's a great post, Lisa. You live in a really pretty place. Having a camp site way out in the woods is something I'm sure most people would give their eye teeth for.
ReplyDeleteI did too much camping in places like the Anatolian plateau and Korea to do it for fun anymore. When I was younger I liked to roam the national forest around my house, my son and I would go out and explore the woods for a few days at a time. Now I prefer my own bed and a hot shower.
I spend most of the summer in my tent. I like the feel being outdoors.I had a nice site on a friends parents property we built up and used it for years.I am headed out this week to go trout fishing in the NE part of Iowa.
ReplyDeleteNo camping here in ages, but funnily (is that a word?) Hunter did this past weekend. :)
ReplyDeleteYour spot looks awesome and the boys happy! Love that.
xoxo
Oh how neat --to have a campsite on the top of a mountain on your own property... IF we were younger, we'd have a cabin with LOTS of land around it (like you have)... We love being out in the woods.. Food (any kind of food --even pork-n-beans) tastes so much better when cooked and eaten over a campfire... YUM...
ReplyDeleteDo you ever spend the night up there? What kind of wildlife do you have on your property? I'd want to get me a tent and spend the night up there.... LOVE IT.
What a neat post. Thanks.
Hugs,
Betsy
Which I was up there with you all because I love camping out, however, someone I'm married to known as "old cranky pants" (especially when it comes to camping!) doesn't. He believes in luxuries...like beds, mattresses, bathrooms and TV!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteI love your campsite! What a cheerful post. =)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love camping! The Great Scot? A motel without room service is roughing it, lol.
i love it. no kidding. i love getting away & just being one with the nature. the world. so perfect. there is nothing better. i come home & i wonder why do we put up with this stress ... get away out there is the greatest. i wish i (we) could do it more often. so fun! ( :
ReplyDeletelove the hammocks.
That's really nice outdoor activity!
ReplyDeleteThat's on your property?! As in, You can just walk there and camp out for the weekend???! Color me envious! I LOVE camping, but we have to get out of the city to do that and to escape all the people here.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! We do love to camp but definitely had our feel of it this summer. I might enjoy it more if it was just a short hike from home though :)
ReplyDeleteI have never camped in my whole life,,, but my mommy camped all the time,, years ago,,, she said its the best thing in the world!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos!
love

these are great photos and to have your own camping site with pit and benches WOW..and hammocks to boot :-)
ReplyDeleteHow cool that you have that so close to you. Love the pic of the boys climbing the tree, and hurrah for hammocks! :)
ReplyDeletewe love camping - we need to do it more often. you all looked like you had a lovely adventure xx
ReplyDeleteI grew up camping and we have taken our own children several times through the years. That first shot of your boys is very sweet.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to be reminded of climbing trees as a kid! But camping out must be the ultimate. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I like camping but my hubby doesn't. I think he's afraid of bears!
ReplyDeleteThat is fun! We've camped in our backyard before. We should do it again. It's getting cold now though.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing, I'm in love with your camping area. The boys look so cute!
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy going camping, but nothing compares to the memories I have of going as a child. I know your boys are going to have this love of the outdoors for a lifetime!
ReplyDeleteI'm still getting over that phrase "on top of one of the mountains on our property." How totally cool that you get to say that! And a private campsite to boot!
