When I was pregnant with Pierce, I had a couple of aversions. The worst was salmon. It took me several years after having Pierce to like salmon again (something I had previously loved). Aversions are kind of interesting. They go back to our hunter and gatherer days, and are our brains' ways of putting us off food that has made us feel sick in the past, so we will learn not to eat poisonous things.
When I was pregnant with the twins, I had an aversion to potato soup. I haven't quite regained that love, but I think I could eat it. Especially if it was made by my dad. Still, I would just prefer to eat other things.
When I was pregnant with all three boys, there was one thing I developed an aversion to that I still cannot stand to smell. I think it started with Pierce, but carried over into the pregnancy with the twins too.
Every morning, I got to work, and the first thing I smelled was my boss's coffee. Now I love the smell of coffee. And I enjoy drinking coffee. Especially flavored coffees, like salted caramel or this coffee a cocoa:
But my boss always made hazelnut coffee. Even today I can't stand the smell of hazelnut coffee. It's been ten years next month since my pregnancy with Pierce. Somehow, I am thinking this is one aversion that isn't ever going away. It's a shame really. I bet hazelnut coffee is good.
Readers, do you have any aversions?
You might like coffee with hazelnut creamer but who knows what is in that stuff. I think those flavored coffees smell much better than they taste so I just have the regular coffee unless I get some super deal.
ReplyDeleteI can't drink or smell tequila to this day. Pretty sure it didn't have anything to do with pregnancy...... at least for my part I guess :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this. Your dad told me to get him the stuff to make potato soup next time I go to Kroger.
ReplyDeletei don't like to drink flavored coffees, but most times don't mind the smell. :)
ReplyDeleteI had an aversion to coffee as well...and Tabasco sauce! I still don't like Tobasco, but coffee (with hazelnut creamer!) is the best!
ReplyDeletefood or drink have always had strong appeal for me. With pregnancies I think i went more for the cravings also, mostly sweets which had always been a downfall for both my wife and myself. Was at Trader Joes yesterday, looking at the coffees. Never tried the cocoa, their feature was Honduran.Like being closer to this store, I always have fun shopping there.I am closer with my new home so it is fun to have all the available shopping.Went with a friend on a shop till we dropped excursion yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI went through a long spell of not wanting tuna ~ I'm over it, but only buy albacore as it doesn't have that strong smell. LOL
ReplyDeleteMostly, I have cravings that want to stay with me until they wear themselves out. :)

Interesting aversions... I used to hate coffee --and never drank it until the kids were grown and out of the house.. NOW---I LOVE it... George's son gave us a new Keurig (K-cup) coffee maker.... WOW---how special I feel!!!! Both of us like flavored coffees and we have had fun trying some of the 'new' flavors (Gingerbread, Eggnog, Cinnabon's Cinnamon Roll, Pumpkin Patch, etc.)... Some we like---some we don't... Both George and I prefer French Vanilla, but I also love Folger's Vanilla Biscata. I like Hazelnut DECAF (Green Mountain)...

That's very interesting. I can't think of any aversions I have. My husband use to drink Hazelnut all the time and I actually like the smell of it! Now he drinks something different.
ReplyDeleteHah! I have this thing with apples when pregnant. If I eat one, I will suddenly go into starvation mode and nothing satisfies me. Weird, right?
ReplyDeleteAversions are certainly a funny thing. After eating a dish with water chestnuts in it, I had a vomiting episode. I've never eaten a water chestnut since then!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that so funny? It must have been a challenge to smell that each morning for you.
ReplyDeleteI once got very ill (flu) after eating french onion soup. I was about 16.....and to this day, I can't handle the smell or thought of it!!!
I can't eat Kraft cheese. You know, those squares of "cheese." I remember gagging at the sight of that when I was pregnant, but I had to peel off the plastic to give to my son, who was 3 at the time. I still sort of gag when I see it. I don't mind not eating it though.
ReplyDeleteguess what kind of creamer goes in the coffees at our house?
ReplyDeleteHaxel nut! One momma likes it,, the other mommy settles for it!

Bourbon. Just the smell of it wants to make me hurl. When I was 17 I had my first serious drunk , and it was bourbon we had on a reserve training session. I had never had hard liquor before. Was sick for three days.
ReplyDeleteI'm a coffee lover. I always start the day with a cup of coffee milk!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any aversions, but I did get food poisoning once from cold broccoli salad and now I never eat cold broccoli in any way.
ReplyDeleteHazlenut coffee is not one of my favourite flavours so I don't think you are missing anything, I have no diet aversions but then I have never been pregnant.
ReplyDeletethe smell of lemon smelling dish soap...even after so many years..
ReplyDeleteYou aren't missing anything! But, it is funny how the mind works with things like this.
ReplyDeleteI did not realize these things before . . .
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing . . .
Yes! I haven't been able to eat chicken soup in a year because I got violently ill after eating some. And for a long time I couldn't eat iceberg lettuce because I ate so much of it when I was dieting. I just got sick of it!
ReplyDeleteI like plain black coffee. My husband likes it plain to.
ReplyDeleteI don't drink coffee, but I have smelled some really good coffee.. then there are others that smell really bitter.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of any aversions right now. But good coffee I love! :)
