Our power went out twice last week. Once was from a wind storm. I'm not sure what caused the second outage.
I decided it was time to get some cast iron for cooking on the wood stove. With temps below 20*, I haven't been too excited about the option of grilling or using the sun oven. I had some cast iron, but it was too large to fit in our little wood stove space.
Nice and seasoned. Sure makes my wood stove look dusty and faded! I also got an enamel kettle that fits in the space too. My first thing to cook was cornbread. I am, through and through, a little bit Southern.
Readers, do you cook anything with cast iron?
I was thinking while carving a pineapple that upside down cake would be good like my mother made in cast iron. It had the best texture.I don't have any, I gave all away to my kids.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are all set for the big snow storm! I have not cooked with a cast iron skillet in years. My mom used to make peanut butte fudge in ours and those are some fond memories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice stove! I can't use tall ones as the pipe has to go out through old fire places here and they are at floor level. I cook with cast iron almost every day and it is supposed to leech iron into the food so it is actually good for you.
ReplyDeleteI ended up with 36 pints of rooster, they must have been larger this time as some of the leg bones were about 8 inches, looked like turkey legs. Still canning broth.
Enjoy the snow.
Your stove is so lovely!! We use cast iron all the time; almost exclusively for skillet cooking. I switched over a few years ago....love!!
ReplyDeleteI bought my first cast iron frying pan a few months ago. Still not used it though as have not got around to seasoning it! Nice stove!
ReplyDeleteOur wood stove is our backup cooking stove also. Hope we don't need it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI don't.. only because I was lazy about keeping mine "seasoned".... and ruined it.
ReplyDeleteLove your wood stove!! What kind is it? Thats about all I use to cook is cast iron which I love cooking with and glass.
ReplyDeleteI haven't used cast iron in a while, but my grandmother cooked with it all the time, and boy was that good tasting food. I now have a coated cast-iron dutch oven which is easier to clean and does a good job.
ReplyDeleteHope you aren't going to be snowed in this weekend!
I don't use mine very often anymore, but have several that belonged to Mom. That's awesome, Lisa. You are one smart cookie! :)

I use my cast iron all the time it sits on top of my electric stove waiting three sizes gets every job done. I love them. Hug B
ReplyDeleteVery cool, and I'm sorry your power went out, hope your weather improves. We have a few of those skillets but we only use them for camping now!
ReplyDeleteHope you're safe and warm this weekend! I love cast iron, but it's grown too heavy for me to use safely so it's being passed down to my daughter.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Growing up we had a tea kettle and pot for soup that we put on a little metal rack on our wood burning stove so we could do a little cooking when the power went out (which was all the time for some reason- even sunny non windy days).

No, but I hope you have a mitten for the cast iron! I'm accustomed to the electric stove. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I have a cast iron skillet. I prefer it to chemical-coated pans.
ReplyDeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a good corn bread recipe to share?? We love corn bread,, but dont have a good recipe to try.

You are certainly prepared. I have a whole board on Pinterest for skillet cooking! I got a beautiful one for Christmas a few years ago. Haven't used it much but I plan to.
ReplyDeleteHaven't used cast iron in ages, nor cooked on the wood stove top in ages either but it's a damned good skill to have and the equipment to do so. Kudos to you for laughing in the face of the power outages!!!
ReplyDeleteMine weighs a ton but I bring it into the wilderness on canoe trips to fry fish over a campfire...:)
ReplyDeleteawesome! i use it when i cook pork chops (rarely, these days) and when i make a pan-fried hamburger. :)
ReplyDeleteI heard they are the best. We have a glass stove, so we don't have any cast iron.
ReplyDeleteWe've been lucky with keeping power!
ReplyDeleteMy mom and my grandma both always used cast iron. I bet my mom still does. :) And hooray for cornbread!
ReplyDeleteMy mom and grandma always used cast iron. I don't bake as much now and my wrists/hands are weak, so I gifted their cast iron to someone I knew would cherish it. Cornbread is one of favorite treats!!!
ReplyDeleteLarry likes to cook cornbread in a cast iron skillet.
