A Forest of Basil

I just love basil.  I've got a few pots of basil planted around the house.  I've already dipped into it some for a frittata I made, but mostly I like to use it on pizza and to make pesto.


Dried basil just can't compare to fresh.  I have a number of other herbs planted as well - a few didn't come up but there are a good number that are in the business of growing.

  1. Two houses ago I planted and enjoyed basil. My current house has a huge collection of spearmint growing next to the carport. Just walking through it the aroma clings to your shoes and follows you into the house.

  3. I'm waiting for my basil. I use a small leaf for salads and large leaf for everything I can use it for. Make pesto varying the nuts, using pistachio, pine nuts or english walnuts. It is a regional dish in Italy.fresh makes difference in flavor.In 2008 when the cabin was flooded for two weeks, I came back to basil sprouting back up, the only plants to survive.

  4. Basil is one of our favorites too. John's brother is a chef and introduced me to pesto many years ago.
    I remember having lemon balm one year, too. It was a nice addition to lemon muffins or to ice tea!

  7. Well, basil is one of my favorites! Followed closely by cinnamon, chives, dill, and ginger. Yours looks beautiful! I need to just buy the fresh. But I never use enough of any one spice in a short time to justify spending the money! Well, I do have some fresh mint in the fridge. I want to try this recipe with grilled pineapple, yogurt, honey and mint on toast.

  8. YUM... Fresh herbs are always so much better... My mother used to plant chives --and they were always so tasty cut up in salads and other food items. I also love spearmint ---and love to smell it and put it in my iced tea... YUM....

  10. I've tried to grow basil in the past, but the only herb that I've grown and actually used on food was dill many years ago. If I was eating a backed potato, I would go out and snip some dill, wash it, pat it dry, then cut it up on the potato. SO much better fresh than the store bought dry.

  13. My pots of basil are coming along - couldn't get through Summertime without this great herb - my tomatoes and fresh mozzarella would be unhappy! I even cut it for rooting in a glass at the kitchen window, can never have too much. Pesto will be made soon also.

    Cilantro is one of my favorite :)

  17. We aren't growing many herbs this year due to various reasons, but I have been harvesting a lot of 'wild' herbs like mallow, plantain, chamomile and nettles. I shall concentrate on growing more 'domestic' herbs next year when we hopefully should have our poly tunnel.
