Hiking and Hauntings

Over Memorial Day I met my friend Trina at Explore Park and we took the boys hiking.  She used to work there, and was able to tell the boys all about the interesting historic buildings scattered throughout.  What makes Explore Park so fun is that they have little settlements from different centuries all through the park.  While hiking, we saw many turtles and dragonflies, and heard some bullfrogs.

Things were going quite well until we reached the 19th century.  As we were hiking by the blacksmith shop, the strangest thing happened.  My hiking boots somehow tied themselves together IN A KNOT and I fell flat.  I scraped up both hands and a knee.

How is it even possible for two boots to tie themselves together?  We'd been hiking already for a stretch and everything had been fine up to this point.

The boys are convinced now that Explore Park is haunted.  Or perhaps just has a few fairies - Pierce read in his Ripley's Believe it or Not book that fairies like to mess with shoes.

This is a picture of a grist mill in Explore Park - it is not original - it's a replica.  Still, it's quite charming nestled in the valley like this.

Readers, have you ever heard of shoelaces that tie themselves together?  Or mischievous blacksmith ghosts?

  2. Sounds like a really neat park. Wish we had one like it around here.

As for shoelace fairies hmmmmm. Wonder if there were two of them?

  3. That is so weird. In 41 years of running I've never had it happen or heard that it happened to others.

  4. I have never had hiking boots or shoes that tied themselves together. That's very mysterious. I'm sorry you got hurt. Now you've got me pondering this.

  6. Oh goodness, Lisa. I'm sorry this happened to you. Those fairies better watch it, or Pierce will find a way to help his mama.

I've never had that happen but that's not to say I haven't tripped over my own feet.

  8. I'm sorry about your fall! I would chalk that one up to fairies before I'd even consider ghosts. Because fairies are cooler. =)

  9. I love your beautiful picture! And I have to admit that I agree with Pierce! Or maybe someone wanted you to go in the Blacksmith shop. I have never ever heard of this happening! How are you now? What a bizarre story!

  10. It is definitely more fun to imagine places as haunted. Some places certainly look that way.

  11. The fairies constantly untie my boots. That water mill was once near Callaway and since they don't have a running stream they put water up in a pond to power it at the park.
Tell the boys that Debbie went hiking today and almost stepped on a rattlesnake!

  14. It's very pretty!

Some claim that Hummel Park is haunted here. That's where the boys have, had summer camp the last few years. Oh the stories we heard even when I was younger and went there.

  15. Sounds like Pixies to me. They are similar to Gremlins I'm told, naughty little creatures that like to cause mischief. All pilots know about Grimlins!

The park sounded pretty good until you crashed and burned. :-0

  17. What the heck???! How did that happen?

That's weird. I'm gonna side with the kids--it was definitely fairies. Evil fairies.
