My Kids Didn't Know About Tubing

We decided to take the boys tubing for father's day.  Paul and I hadn't been since the mid 90s, so we were pretty excited for a relaxing day on the Pigg River.  We were alarmed to discover that morning that our kids didn't even know what tubing was!  We had to explain to them about the intertubes they would float on and the river.

The water was a little chilly initially, but it was a warm day so it felt refreshing.  We had a short hike to the spot where we put in.

All smiles and ready to go!  The water was flowing gently.  There were one or two spots you had to walk a few steps, but overall it was perfect.  We saw frogs, a turtle, and three snakes.

It took about 90 minutes total to float the whole stretch.  Here we are at the end.
It was a really fun experience, and the boys are all begging to return.  Turns out they are big fans of tubing!

  2. ...the older I get, I become aware of all the things that my grandkids don't understand...and they become aware of all the things that I don't understand.

  3. Oh, that's funny that they didn't know what it was! I think the hardest part is just letting the current move you along without paddling. Slow is good....not sure kids get that.

Looks like a TON of fun!

  4. Short and sweet, I took one that was over 6 hours and roasted all of us bad. I like to while away one in a while in my kayak.Haven't been out, but have a few offers coming up.

  8. Great fun. The last time that I heard about anyone tubing was when our son went with his girlfriend and all of her girlfriends in college in the early 2000’s. Glad your guys had fun. Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  10. Used to love tubing, but on the sea, so it was like sit down surfing because of the waves, and only on the incoming tide, never on the outgoing incase we all floated off into the wide blue yonder!

  14. Tubing is excellent summer fun! But you were wise to wait until they are old enough to fit comfortably and safely in those inner tubes;)

  15. Tubing is a big deal here, because we have a large number of wide, shallow rivers. Helen, Ga has a bunch of tubing outfits for visitors and if you go over to the town you usually see kids tubing down river in the summer. It's a lot of fun I guess, but I have never tried it. Have done canoeing down the river, though.

  16. What a great activity for Father's Day! Lewie hasn't been tubing yet either, so I wonder if he'd not know what it is too. It looks like everyone had a great time; although, I'm not sure how I'd feel about seeing three snakes!! Will you do it again this summer?

  19. It looks like fun to me!

I went tubing like that a long time ago in Valentine, NE. I had fun, but my friend Mark hit a rock somehow, didn't have his glasses on, so I had to try and help him out of the water. An ambulance came to get him, but it took a really long time because we were in the middle of no where. He had to stay the rest of the trip in the tent because he broke 2 ribs.
